Okay, listen. I hate studying stats. Yet, it was required for my degree. So here is the book that helped me. It's a good book for studying stats. I just can't force myself to click on any stars that might indicate that I appreciated this book in any way other than a purely scientific one. That being said. if you must study stats and are clueless - this book should help. :)

I highly recommend this book for beginners. I have an Operations Research/Optimization background (Ph.D. actually), but I always feel confused about statistics. I tried many intro statistics books and ended up quitting after reading the first few chapters. This book introduces statistics in a very intuitive and structured way. There is very little math in the book but it did a good job explaining why some concepts are needed. An example is the Central Limit Theory. I took a statistical inference..more
This is great if you are new to statistics, and need concepts explained in lay terms.

I regret that Professor Rumsey was not my teacher..
The book is designed for self-study. The whole text is divided into short sections, and frequent iterations make you remember more than you bargained for. The author took pity on her readers to a minimum limiting the math in the text. If you know the basics of algebra easily handle with the presented formulas, although acquisition of certain parts will require effort from you. Each example is very minutely analyzed. A good book to introduce you in the 'life' of statistics but also you first steps to deal with your future research. Overall a good book but with a lot of math at one point, for a doctor it can be overwhelming :)) It can be updated in the future to present the current software that can help you to calculate fast correlations and statistics .

Very accessible. I read it in 2 sittings. Amazing review from Stats 1.
Used some real world examples that I hadn't thought of before. If your were to teach kids about how to sample a population, have one student come up and pretend to be a gourmet chef and demonstrate for the class how to test if the soup is good. Instinctively they will do an amazingly accurate job.

For learning and reference. Just fine for beginners, I suppose. I still need to learn more, though.

great explanation about statistics. it all comes down to exploring sample size populations, standard deviations, margin of error and confidence intervals.

A good supplement to go with my text. Approachable.
great for the interpretation of statistics; not very helpful with their creation. Somewhat dated also.

This was my second time reading this book in an effort to re familiarize myself with some basic mathematics principles. I love when I read a book and can immediately use the knowledge at work. Dr. Rumsey takes what might be a dry subject and start you off not with a lot of math, but some valid reasons why the average person would want to read the book in the first place.

Long and tiresome
I suppose I should have expected it to feel that way but it felt like there was a rehash of concepts over and over. That is a good teaching tactic but it just doesn't work for me and I increasingly disengaged from the book.

“Statistics for Dummies” by Deborah J. Rumsey (Professor of Stats, Ohio State) provides a nice overview of the most basic and common statistical formulas and their real world applications. This overview includes distributions and the Central Limit Theorem, calculating margins of error and confidence intervals, and a run-through of commonly used statistical tests. The author also introduces readers to one generic research design process, which may be useful for anyone who has never carried out an..more

This book is a good supplement to any course in statistics. Its simple, straight-to-the-point language helps a lot with figuring out some of the theories presented in regular textbooks. I liked the focus on interpretation of data and being critical in regards to reported statistical findings and I was pleased to find that explanations were given even of how to calculate things by using what I previously though of nightmarish formulas. The tips regarding what to do when preparing for and when tak..more
A very helpful book when talking yourself out of gambling. I really did enjoy the section of this book that breaks down the reasons that you shouldn't buy into all of the statistics that you see in the media and advertisements. Reading about statistics and probabilities was actually not boring with this book and it uses a lot of real world examples that make this book a surprising fun read.
Actually, I only read the first few pages in the 9 weeks before the library wanted it back. I was looking for an easy-to-read review of statistical concepts and formulas; the author wanted to tell me how to figure out when someone is lying to me with statistics.
Ok, I know this doesn't really count as a book that you would read from cover to cover.. but it's a book nonetheless. I am a dummy, and statistics is the thorn in my side, so I thought, 'PERFECT!' So far so good.
I'm reading this because I need to be reading it. I may give it more stars when I'm done -- if I think I've learned what I need to and what I should have learned a long time ago by taking an undergraduate course.
It is a great book to learn the basics of statistics.
Reading How Not to Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking made me want to refresh on Statistics! This book is pretty basic, no formulas, etc. Did the trick
..pray for me..or at least meditate deeply in my direction, if you're into that kind of thing..
Thank God for authors who can write in plain English.
just getting read for my classes next quarter. easy to follow.
I'm already chapters into the book since I needed it to explain my statistics class to me. My brain is mush.

Great book to help you understand the rare world of statistics and give you a better understanding why 'alternate facts' are just plain olds lies.

This one helped me get through my stats class. It was a comforting resource in my online class, particularly when the power points would look all Greek to me!

As an engineering graduate with a weak grasp of intermediate statistics from my college days (e.g., hypothesis testing, p-values, statistical interpretation), I was looking for an easy read to strengthen my understanding and be able to apply it at work, e.g., one could use p-values to support claims when comparing 2 deployed software systems along pre-determined metrics, instead of relying on subjective judgement.
